New Show Update: Hanks/Spielberg WW2 Air Drama Is A Go For Launch

Recently Graham Yost, the creator of ‘Justified’, talked about Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg getting together with HBO for a third time to produce a World War II miniseries (Yost wrote for both the previous two, ‘The Pacific’ and ‘Band of Brothers’). At first it seemed like wishful thinking, but he did have a lot of knowledge about the potential project.

Well, it looks like he knew what he was talking about, as HBO has announced a new series that will explore the aerial battles of the Second Great War, through the lens of the Eighth Air Force (“The Mighty Eighth”).

Based on “Masters of the Air: America’s Bomber Boys Who Fought the Air War Against Nazi Germany” by Donald L. Miller, the series will be a tent pole of HBO’s programing whenever it makes it to air (the date is unknown at this time). HBO has spent big money on the other two miniseries – $125 million on ‘Brothers’ and more than $200 million for ‘Pacific’. Expect a similar financial commitment, as large-scale sets will have to be produced and the special effects will certainly be top-notch.

Both previous series were highly decorated come awards season. ‘The Pacific’ won eight Emmys in 2010, but ‘Brothers’ dominated, with 19 Emmys, as well as wins at the Golden Globes and a Peabody award.
