HBO Asia is gearing up for its first co-production with Australia’s ABC TV, a 10-episode detective drama called Serangoon Road. The series will be set in 1960s Singapore and deal with the intermingling of a variety of groups along Serangoon Road, which was the country’s first major throughway. Gangsters, traders, expatriates and secret societies all played a part in this interesting period and will be a focal point of the program.
Joan Chen and Ario Bayu have joined the series. Chen has appeared on Twin Peaks and The Last Emperor and will be the series headline star. She was last seen on HBO’s Hemingway & Gellgorn movie, which she appeared in with Clive Owen and Nicole Kidman.
Bayu, on the other hand, is a rising Indonesian star. Last year, he won a best supporting nod at the Indonesia Movie Awards and will be seen later this year in the film Java Heat, opposite Mickey Rourke.
“Although filming has started, the series continues to attract additional talented cast and crew from around the world,” said Jonathan Spink, CEO of HBO Asia.
Other stars in the series include Don Hany, Chin Han, Alaric Tay, Pamelyn Chee, Maeve Dermody, Rachel Blake and Russell Wong.
